There are those writers who, with a clever turn of phrase, make us smile. And there are those who, catching us by surprise, make us laugh. But seldom is there combined in one human being the capacity to make you smile, remember, nod in agreement, and laugh out loud. All those gifts are here in Len Robbins’ collection of columns that have appeared in The Clinch County News and newspapers around the state over the past decade.. He writes about his wife, children, friends and relatives, and tragedies such as losing the remote control. A couch-potato who would rather nap than eat (well, it’s close), Robbins is wiser than he would have us believe, being grounded in what William Faulkner referred to as “the old verities and truths of the heart.” No doubt in the future Robbins will dedicate an entire column to lampooning “the old verities.” But readers will understand the joke’s on him. He writes about things that matter—and does it in such a way that while we’re bursting with laughter, we’re remembering our own childhood, or that of our children, and saying to ourselves, “That’s the way it was.”
This delightful collection of works from a natural-born (now there’s a Southern expression for you, worthy of Robbins) humorist will have you smiling long after the final page is read and the book is passed on to friends. On the other hand, buy the friend a copy. You’ll want yours for midnight reading—on the couch,
of course.
